We would like to take a moment to wish you a Happy New Year and remind you to file for your Homestead exemption and save a few of your hard earned dollars!
To ensure a continued positive outlook on real estate, please do the following based on your county designation. To maintain stability for your property taxes, you must identify yourself as the new owner of the property to the county.
Fulton County
Applications must be submitted on or before April 1, 2023. City homestead exemptions vary for each of the 15 cities in Fulton County. Legal residents of these cities will have their basic homestead exemption applied (if any) when they apply to receive a basic Fulton County homestead exemption.
Dekalb County
Homestead exemption applications are accepted year-round. Current year exemptions must be applied for January 2 and April 1, 2023. Applications received after April 1 will be processed for the following year.
City of Decatur
If you live in the City of Decatur, YOU MUST APPLY FOR BOTH DECATUR AND DEKALB.
Homestead exemption applications are accepted year-round; however, to grant an exemption for the current tax year, we must receive your application no later than April 1, 2023. However, please note that although we can accept homestead exemptions until April 1, we encourage eligible homeowners to apply for any new exemptions prior to March 15 to ensure your exemption appears on your 1st installment tax bill.
Cobb County
Applications must be U.S. postmarked (metered or kiosk postmark is not accepted as proof of timely mailing) or received by April 1, 2023.
Gwinnett County
Deadline for submitting application, either online or by mail, is April 1, 2023.
City of East Point
Download the application and submit by April 1, 2023.
City of Hapeville
There is no additional application for the city, but make certain you file with Fulton County!
City of College Park
There is no additional application for the city, but make certain you file with Fulton County!
City of Kennesaw
There is no additional application for the city, but make certain you file with Cobb County!
Coweta County
Applications may be filed year round, however exemptions must be filed for by April 1 to apply to the current tax year and you must still own and occupy the property as of January 1.
Fayette County
All exemption applications must be made in person at the Tax Commissioner's Office before April 1st of the current tax year ~ if you owned and occupied that home as your primary residence on January 1st of the current tax year. New homeowners as of January 2nd of the current tax year can make application for exemption(s) June 1st of the current tax year - April 1st of the following tax year. You must provide a copy of your recorded Warranty Deed or Settlement Statement and your Georgia Drivers License to make the application. By signing an application, the homeowner is lawfully testifying that they do not hold an active application for another property anywhere else in the country. Refinancing does not remove exemptions.
PLEASE NOTE, you need only file for homestead exemption in your first year of home ownership. Each county has different homestead exemption programs. Be sure to read the information for your specific county. If your exemption status should change, you will need to re-apply.
